Sales of mobile phones in the first quarter of this year declined 2% compared to last year. Well, this flagging market analysts predicted could be re-excited with the launch of the iPhone 5.
According to research firm Gartner, sales decreased due to dropping demand for handsets in the Asia Pacific region. "Sales of mobile phones to end users reached 419 million units in the first quarter of 2012, down 2% from the first quarter of 2011."
One reason for the decline in sales is at least a new handset models introduced above board, so many consumers choose to wait to upgrade handset. The presence of new models such as the iPhone 5 is predicted to be present is considered to be an exciting year of sales.
"China is usually a big market in the first quarter, with the Chinese New Year usually make sales explode. But this year, consumers put off upgrading, waiting for the other high end devices such as Apple's new iPhone," said Anshul Gupta, an analyst at Gartner.
Not yet clear exactly when the iPhone 5 is introduced, but it is believed this in 2012. Gartner itself mentions, Apple sold 33.1 million iPhones in the first quarter of 2012.
Apple's own sales figures are still inferior to the Samsung, if you look at the data from various research Gartner and other research agencies. As quoted from PCWorld on Monday (5/21/2012), Samsung has sold as many as 86.5 million mobile phone units.
Gartner does not mention about the newest phones Samsung champion, Galaxy S III, which will be marketed in June. Whereas this Android phone can also play a major role in stimulating cell phone market returns. Galaxy S III reportedly already booked more than 9 million units currently.
